Whereas, the individual right to keep and bear arms is fundamental to a free society and the sportsman heritage of Maine;
Whereas, this right is guaranteed by the Constitution of the State of Maine, which states “Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned” (Article I, Section 16) and the Constitution of the United States of America, which states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (2nd Amendment).
Whereas, Governor Janet Mill has nominated Michael Sauschuck of Portland --- who has publicly stated his belief that Maine people are not competent to use firearms for self-defense and should rely exclusively on police and military members in all cases --- to serve as Commissioner of Public Safety;
Whereas, Sauschuck has regularly appeared in uniform to promote gun control policies, including the 2016 Question 3 gun control referendum financed by NYC billionaire Michael Bloomberg and rejected by the people of Maine, which would have criminalized transfers of firearms between law-abiding Maine people;
Whereas, Sauschuck has publicly called for a new laws that would outlaw the open carry of firearms in every public setting, ban commonly owned firearms and ammunition devices, and eliminate due process rights for Maine gun owners;
Whereas, Sauschuck sits on the Board of Directors for the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, a gun control advocacy organization with ties to NYC billionaire Michael Bloomberg;
Whereas, Maine's Commissioner of Public Safety has broad authority to set policies that infringe on the 2nd Amendment rights of Maine people, including restricting access to concealed carry permits;
Whereas, Governor Janet Mills and Michael Sauschuck have called for new gun control laws that would give officers under the Commissioner of Public Safety the authority to confiscate firearms from targeted Maine people without due process of the law;
Therefore, we the undersigned people of Maine, believe Michael Sauschuck is unfit to serve as Commissioner of Public Safety;
Therefore, we the undersigned people of Maine, call on Governor Janet Mill to withdraw the nomination of Michael Sauschuck for Commissioner of Public Safety and to nominate an individual who will faithfully uphold the Constitution according to his or her oath of office.
Therefore, we the undersigned people of Maine, call on all members of the Maine Legislature's Joint Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety to reject the nomination of Michael Sauschuck for Commissioner of Public Safety;
Therefore, we the undersigned people of Maine, call on all members of the Maine Senate to exercise their constitutional confirmation authority to reject the nomination of Michael Sauschuck for Commissioner of Public Safety.
